1.1. Srđan Durković, Zoran Čiča: Packet Switch Architecture for Efficient Unicast and Multicast Traffic Switching - Invited paper

Abstract - Packet switch architecture still has significant impact on overall packet switched network performance. Thus, it is important to develop efficient packet switches that have high performance and scalability while maintaining low implementation costs. In this paper, we present efficient and low complexity packet switch architecture based on load balanced Birkhoff-von Neumann switches while combining some of the properties of input queued switches to comprise the best properties of these two switch classes while avoiding their downsides. We also present fair service and multicast support for the presented packet switch architecture. The conducted simulations and gained simulation results show promising performance that either matches or outperforms existing packet switching schemes.

5.9. Tijana Nosek, Siniša Suzić, Milan Sečujski, Darko Pekar: Expressive multilingual speech synthesizer - Invited paper

Abstract - The research presented in the paper addresses the challenge of multilingual text-to-speech with the specific aim to be able to generate speech in combination of speaker and language which is absent from the training dataset. This scenario is commonly referred to as cross-lingual speech synthesis. The innovative models introduced in the paper accomplish cross-lingual speech synthesis by applying neural network embeddings, not only to speaker and speaking style identifiers but also to context-dependent phonemes and various prosodic events. This approach enables the model to effectively capture relationships between phonemes and prosodic events across different languages, thus enabling the synthesis of speech in the voice of an individual who has never spoken the target language. Subjective and objective evaluation of various aspects of synthesized speech have confirmed that the proposed models are able to synthesize high-quality speech and to maintain the properties of the voice of the original speaker in a cross-lingual scenario.

6.1. Stefan Pijetlović, Ivan Kastelan, Milos Subotic, Nebojsa Pjevalica: Improving finite-difference time-domain memory bandwidth by using block floating-point arithmetic - Invited paper

Abstract - Finite-difference time-domain is a numerical method used for modelling of computational electrodynamics. The method is resource intensive, especially regarding memory usage since multiple memory accesses are required per single computation. In other words, memory, or more precisely its speed, is a limiting factor for the overall performance. Existing solutions focus either on structures with great parallelism such as graphical processing units or custom designs. The former have issues with underutilized resources, while the latter require significant time and effort to achieve similar or slightly better performances. The approach taken during this research was to target the memory itself and find a way to improve the efficiency of memory usage across multiple platforms. The main contribution of the paper is using block floating-point in a novel way regarding the finite-difference time-domain method. The presented solution is a verification of earlier research, proving that the performance of this algorithm can indeed be improved using the suggested methods.

7.1. Jovana Petrović, Dragan Olcan, Antonije Djordjević: High-precision integration using singularity cancelation in method of moments - Invited paper

Abstract - We present coordinate transformations that cancel logR, 1/R, and 1/R2 singularities encountered in electromagnetic analysis of bodies of revolution and two-dimensional structures. They are intended for entire-domain high-order method of moments analysis of both flat and curvilinear two-dimensional strips made of a perfect electric conductor, and of bodies of revolution with metallic and dielectric domains. After the transformations, the integrals with these singularities are calculated up to 14 significant digits using the Gauss-Legendre procedure. Owing to the high-precision integration, the entire-domain analysis of two-dimensional structures is successfully performed on a strip with width up to 4,000 wavelengths. High-precision integration for body of revolution analysis enabled the full-wave numerical model of the custom-made coaxial chamber for dielectric measurement. This increased the upper frequency limit for the extraction of dielectric parameters from 1 GHz up to 3 GHz.

7.2. Neda Spasojevic: A method for establishing RF power traceability below 10 MHz - Invited paper

Abstract - The calibration of RF power measuring devices such as power sensors, ensures the establishment of traceability of RF power and the achievement of lower measurement uncertainty. Power measurement and calibration at high frequencies are less complicated than those at low frequencies. The reason lies in the characteristic impedance, which is complex and frequency-dependent at low frequencies, while at several megahertz, it becomes purely resistive. This purely resistive impedance enables direct power measurement, rather than the indirect measurement through voltage and current, typically used at low frequencies. This is why the equipment and methods used at high frequencies are fundamentally different and simpler. Consequently, RF power standards, typically microcalorimeters, thermistor power sensors, and power transfer standards, are primarily designed for frequencies above a few megahertz, often starting at 10 MHz. As a result, most metrological laboratories that calibrate measuring equipment in the radio-frequency and microwave ranges cover the range from 10 MHz to 18 GHz, or even up to 26.5 GHz. While there are some standards in the market available for low frequencies, procuring high-price standard to cover a narrow frequency range is unreasonable and expensive for most laboratories. Unlike older-generation power sensors, which do not cover frequencies below 100 kHz, there is an increasing number of contemporary sensors that can measure power from several kilohertz, or even from DC. Therefore, the issue of power sensor calibration in the low-frequency range arises, and the solution is proposed by the method presented in this paper. This method overcomes the problems of radio-frequency power calibration below 10 MHz, which are widespread in many calibration laboratories. These problems are related to the specificity of power calibration and the absence of a typical RF power standard and network analyzer in the low-frequency range. One of the primary goals of the study was to develop a method that could be applied in most metrology laboratories in the field of RF domain. The proposed method focuses on the calibration of RF power sensors as typical RF power measuring devices and the determination of their accuracy, specifically their calibration factor below 10 MHz. The crucial points in the study included the selection of an appropriate RF power standard in the low-frequency range and the realization of a measurement procedure that provides an acceptable measurement uncertainty. The traceability of RF power is established using the alternating voltage standard, specifically, the thermal converter. The method employs a resistive power splitter, the symmetry of which is determined by an alternative method involving a thermal voltage converter. The determination of symmetry significantly reduces the total measurement uncertainty by more than six times. This method ensures users the traceability of RF power within the low-frequency range and the reduces the uncertainty of RF power measurements by sensors by up to seventy percent, by applying correction factor obtained during calibration.

10.19. Davor Sutic: Selected algorithms in graph theory and linear algebra adapted for Big Data – A summary - Invited paper

Abstract - This extended abstract summarizes the research done in an effort to develop scalable approaches to select few computationally hard problems from the domains of linear algebra and graph theory in order to make them viable for large datasets. The open source solutions herein are the first of their kind both in handling large datasets in a distributed manner and in the map reduce paradigm, which also motivated the choice of the problems. Apache Spark has been chosen as the common infrastructure. This allows for a shared basis and makes the different problems quantitatively comparable in at least one dimension, but also abstracts away various distributed systems basics like communication and reliability, which, while important, don’t contribute to the results. The first solution addresses the power flow problem using the Newton-Raphson method as a well-known approach for solving systems of non-linear equations. In its core lie the necessary matrix operations that are applicable to a large array of other problems. The second problem is the island detection problem in power networks. Here, two classical approaches are implemented. First, the connectedness analysis, which can be reduced to the connected components problem, a common challenge in graph theory. Second, the full matrix analysis, which relies on multiplying the connectedness matrix with itself multiple times, until the islands become apparent. In the core of this approach lie matrix multiplication and the problem of connected components in graphs, which are both hard problems in their respective fields. The third and final solution is a software package that offers tools for spectral graph analysis, ultimately provide the building blocks for the spectral graph sparsification algorithm, while also being useful by themselves, e.g. generating a Laplacian matrix. Spectral graph sparsification is a complex procedure for reducing the number of edges, while retaining the spectral properties of the graph. Given that every graph can be sparsified, it becomes clear how this is particularly useful for large graphs. These complex algorithms, which are extensively used in industrial applications, are adapted to the requirements dictated by the Big Data needs. This means they are made suitable for a distributed environment and large amounts of data in such a way, that the increasing problem size can be compensated with scaling of the computing environment. Given that all of them have only made marginal improvements in the performance of algorithms, if any, the distributed approach is the next logical venue for improvement. In a way, this means compensating computational complexity with computing power to overcome large amounts of data, which wouldn’t be possible by using just the classical algorithms. The solutions were verified with experiments conducted using the Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR) framework. It is a natural choice, as the integrated support for Apache Spark reduces the margin for configuration error and facilitates rapid deployment. Special care has been taken to select illustrative and publicly available datasets for the verification to show that the solution can handle problems relevant in the real world and that their size supports the common understanding of the Big Data definition. The results indicate a reasonable execution time achieved by open-source software that is easily scalable and serve to direct further research in overcoming the current limitations. In a broader sense, although the problems herein seem very specific in their domain of application, the underlying core mechanics contain common mathematical challenges, applicable to a broad spectrum of problems.
